Swales Taking Shape

The Biological Orchard and Gardens or, the BOG’s purpose is to take an moribund space comprised of hard-packed clay soil and turn it into a healthy, agro-biodiverse orchard and drought tolerant plant gardens on the UC Davis campus. The importance of this new orchard and garden thoroughly falls in line with a campus landscape refining framework that “reduces amounts of inputs into the landscape, while increasing the aesthetic, sustainability, and ecosystem services of the Campus lands”.

Slow Food, Ark of Taste Orchard – California Trees

The orchard, planned for a quadrant of the site and will observe Backyard Orchard Culture management practices and will feature Slow Food Ark of Taste fruit trees. The trees will have a California designation and will experience management practices that prune fruit trees into shrub shapes.

Mediterranean Climate Gardens

The plants incorporated into the grounds will consist of native California dry shade varieties that include perennials, annuals, shrubs and groundcover. The gardens will also include drought-tolerant plants from South Africa, Chile, Australia and Old World Mediterranean regions, furthering the campus’ mission to reduce water use.
